The crowds gathered beside the tracks at the old freight depot located on North Ohio Avenue (US 129 North) shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Terri Burnett brought her grandchildren from Hamilton County to see the train.
“I think a Live Oak stop would be pretty nice,” said Burnett.
Carolyn Saft held a sign that said, “Please take us to Jacksonville.” She said she would love an Amtrak stop in Live Oak so she could take a train to the Jacksonville International Airport instead of driving and leaving her vehicle parked for the amount of time she is gone.
It was the first Amtrak train from New Orleans to Jacksonville since Hurricane Katrina, with the purpose of inspecting rail infrastructure, and Live Oak residents are hoping Amtrak will bring permanent service back to Live Oak.
