Local officials are asking the public to form a welcoming party for an Amtrak train passing through town on Friday.
The city is lobbying Amtrak to consider Live Oak as a destination stop for its Pensacola to Jacksonville passenger line. The train, which departed New Orleans on Thursday, will be carrying officials from the city and the county.
It will be the first train from New Orleans to Jacksonville since Hurricane Katrina, with the purpose of inspecting rail infrastructure.
The train is expected to pass through Live Oak Friday. Officials are asking folks to be at the former freight station next to the tracks on North US Highway 129 no later than 4:30 p.m.
“If all the clubs, cheer squads and athletes could show up downtown at this time, it would be very much appreciated,” wrote Live Oak Deputy City Clerk Mary Nims.
